WHATT IN PHITSANULOK
14 February 2002

Arrived here from Phicit yesterday afternoon. Train was delayed by an hour. Only exercise I did was to walk to the Tourism Authority of Thailand to get some travel brochures of some towns in the vicinity. Today I wanted to take a complete rest but was too tempted to go for a jog this morning after seeing people jogging along the Yom river yesterday evening. Woke up at 6am and did an hour jog-a-walk, followed by a cup of steaming coffee at a roadside stall near the market. I'm beginning to sense that a lot of Thais here are rather ignorant about their own place.

Performing 'Flying Vegetable' in Phitsanulok
Most of the time when I made inquiries about a certain place they do not seem to know the whereabouts. This morning I wanted  to take a free shuttle service to Lotus Supermarket and was instructed to go to a certain bus-stand. As always I wanted to make sure and asked a lady waiting there. She told me I was at the wrong place and directed me to the correct one. As it was Valentine’s Day today, I gave myself a treat, splashing about Rm11 for a bowl of Japanese Saba Donburi
and a bowl of Prawn Tomyam soup for lunch. That's the most expensive lunch so far.  Phisanulok is well-known for their "Flying vegetable"  in  which one particular stall along the riverside entertain package tourists with a spectacular  culinary display. The chef will fry "Kangkong" and then toss it up into the air to a waiter  perched on a ladder mounted to a mini-lorry who will then catch the flying vegetable with a ready plate in hand to the warm applause of the audience. It's a nightly affair. Will be leaving for Um Phang via Mae Sot tomorrow.
