On the 27th Nov. 1984, I boarded the Royal Nepal Airlines
in Bangkok and headed for Kathmandu, arriving at nightfall. Striking up
a conversation with 2 other New Zealanders, we hailed a taxi to take us
to the city where we holed up at a GH for the night. It was freezingly
cold and as the other 2 had sleeping bags, they offered their blankets
to me. The next day we parted company and immediately went to a camping
store to rent a sleeping bag which I used until the end of my trip. Rented
a bicycle and cycled all over. Nearly landed in jail when I was stopped
by a policeman while negotiating a round-about. I was only let off after
producing my passport. It was here that I learned to appreciate eating
Muesli for breakfast. Although Indian and Tibetan food were available,
it wasn't really something to shout about. Oranges were plentiful and cheap.
Made a stop over in Burma again before returning to Bangkok.
