East Malaysia & Brunei
April 1997
It was raining slightly on the 24th April 1997 as I waited at the bus-stop for a bus to JB airport. At 3.45pm the plane lifted off and landed at the Kuching airport at 4.45pm. Took a local bus to the city and checked in at Ah Chew hotel just in front of the bus station. The next day while roaming around I discovered the Anglican GH and shifted to it. Visited Fort Marguerita, the Governor's resident. the Civic Centre plaza and also took a local to Bau.
On the 28th I took an express boat to Sibu. Curious to find out what binsit was, I ordered a bowl. It turned out to be wantan soup.
On the 30th I was on my way to Bintulu by bus. After putting up 2 nights there,I next proceeded to the Niah Caves. Checked into the hostel for Rm13.50 and then started to walk the 3km plank walkway to the cave entrance. After spending about an hour in the cave, I went to a nearby longhouse after being told by a vendor that there was sporting event going on.
Whizzed passed Miri on the 3rd May on my way to Bandar Seri Bengawan where I was picked up by Dominic at the Brunei hotel. Spent the next few days in BSB visiting Kampung Air, climbing Bukit Kianggeh, shopping at Yayasan SHB and also being driven around BSB by my gracious host, Dominic. At night we enjoyed ourselves at the Jerudung Park together with Dom's family.
On the 8th I took a boat to Kota Kinabalu via Labuan. Checked into TRH dormitory for Rm16/bed.Took a boat to Pulau Gaya, enjoying the long walk through bush trails and swamps. Also took a bus to Tuaran to see the weekend tamu which was quite colourful. Flew back to JB on the 12th
