China - Yangshuo
December 1992

Although a rather isolated town, Yangshuo was like the Khaosan Rd of Bangkok. You throw a stone and it would hit a Mat Salleh. I remember meeting an American who lamented that he didn't like Chinese kids, especially in the villages. When I asked why, he said whenever the kids saw him, they would start throwing stones at him. I guess in those days anti-American sentiments were very strong and school children were probably taught that Americans were devils. I only hope that this sentiment is still there.
Rented a bicycle and wanted to take a boat to Xinping, a village 23km from Yangshuo but at 26FEC per trip, I thought it was rather expensive. Met 2 Dutchmen and we decided to cycle there.

We passed through this Kitten hill.

This cute little girl in a medicine shop caught my fancy but her father didn't quite fancy me, I guess.

Remember how we used to have our haircut al fresco fashion.

 Moon hill, somewhere near Yangshuo.

 Under the Moon hill arch.
This was part of the Li river where the famous Chinese classic film "Liu San Chiar" was filmed. By the time we reached Yangshuo, it was near evening and time for a dose of caffiene. Did you know that Mao Tse Tung had a Christian name. I didn't until I went to this cafe.
