BURMA
December 1983

Stayed in Rangoon for a week because those days individual travellers were only given a week's visa. Bought a bottle of Red Label and a carton 555 and sold it off in the black market. That money was enough to pay for my food and lodging. Can never forget the "nasi byrani" one of the best I've ever tasted. Also the "Mohinga" which is akin to our Laksa Johor. The only shopping center was the Bokyoke Bazaar. Stayed at the Strand Hotel, a relic of the colonial master.  I understand that now you have to pay through your nose to stay there.

While staying at the Strand Hotel, I befriended the telephone operator, Miss Yee Yee Shan who spoke very good English. Unfortunately her schedule did not allow her to socialise but it was still fun having a conversation with her. Alas! when I returned she went on an extended holiday and I failed to see her. We kept up our correspondence for a few years before everything fizzled off. Anyway, from this trip I learned some valuable experiences. To check the flight schedule to ensure that you arrive in a strange land during the daytime. To check the weather condition prior to departure. To let someone know beforehand your intended visit.
